In 1977 the Variety Club of Great Britain held a banquet, in honour of Tommy Cooper completing 30 years in show-business. Here is that said night relived.

"Chief-Barker, distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen pray silence
for your distinguished guest of honour, Mr Tommy Cooper."

Tommy gets to his feet to deliver his speech to the Variety Club guests

  Tumultuous reception

"Thank you......thank you....thank you...thank you very much. Chief-Barker, Fellow Barkers,
distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.....From now on this speech goes downhill a bit."

Dove: "Your Fez."

"What?"

Dove: "You've got to put your Fez on."

"Not yet, not yet........I told you to wait in the truck didn't I?"

Uproar

"Your own wife heckles you, that's good innit."

"Anyway I must say that when I heard about this honour I told the family and I told
my son and daughter. I've got a son and daughter, I get things right sometimes."

"And I said to my son Thomas, 'I've been invited, as guest of honour, to lunch
by the Variety Club.'  And he looked at  me with tears in his eyes.. and he
flung his arms around me........and he said, 'What the hell for?"
